So here at the Cooks Dock Rd estate we are big on
planned maintenance. Rather than wait for something to break...we
replace it when it has reached the end of its life cycle, even though it may still be working properly. So without
further ado...
On with the water heater. The
old heater was original to the home. The build date on the heater is
2002 and was probably put into service in 2003. Typically the life span
of an electric water heater is 8 to 12 years but a lot depends on the
installation, build quality, water quality and proper maintenance....for
example draining sludge out of the bottom petcock. As our water is from
a dug well and not chlorinated, the old heater lasted some 17 years.
When it was pulled from service it still had no leaks. But let's not push
the envelope eh? This is my second time working with the PEX system. The
PEX system was really introduced to me by Doug Wismer (Noun:A person
of high moral fibre and mechanical aptitude). The fittings come in an
unbelievable array of types and very reasonably priced. A stainless
crimp ring secures the plastic PEX tubing to the fitting, making installs
a snap. (a crimp???) The tubing can also be colour coded. So...if you are doing a new build
or addition or a reno...consider the PEX system. Oh...the PEX crimp tool
usually sells on Amazon for around $40 ish.
