It was a 50 shades of gray overcast winter sky. Temps were running around minus 8 when Stella and I headed out for a 5 k hike. Starting thru the woods to the back of the property and then North bound thru the woods. There still is 10 to 15 cm of snow in the forest which made the hike all that more challenging. (Not for the dog though who seems to relish running thru the stuff with her ball)
We came across this strange tree. It seemed the tree could not make up its mind which way to grow. Up, then sideways, then down and then back up again. When you have that many trees in your forest I guess there will be the odd mutation. Did you know that an average acre of northern hardwoods forest contains nearly 5,500 trees? Of these, nearly 5,300 are seedlings or saplings, 182 are larger live trees, and 8 are standing-dead trees. Now that seems like a lot. It's because new growth is included. If you were just to sample the mature trees only it would range from 50 to 500 trees depending on species and forestry management.(Thinning). All this information based on several sources found on the internet.
Meanwhile...on with the walk. On the way down to the dock I spotted coyote prints and possible lynx/bobcat paw prints in the fresh snow. They must have been only a few hours old. The ice is starting to build in the bay. The winds have been NW to NE so any ice that formed got pushed back in the bay. Stella and I turned around at the dock and headed for home. (Where Bice is cooking a
5.5 Kg ham!!!) Can't wait to have supper this evening.
