Robinson Township is an unorganized district. All chaos and mayhem? Or just really messy? No. There is just no local municipal government. An anarchist's dream? Not really. You don't need a building permit. As long as you have a Letter of Conformity, after handing in a sketch of what you are planning to build, you're good to go. You have to build to code, but there is no inspection to make sure you did it to code. Well ... your insurance may not agree, or Hydro One, for starters. Selling the property might be a challenge as well, so better do it to code. There is a Local Service Board though, overseen by the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, responsible for everything usually handled by a local, municipal or county government. Silver Water is part of Robinson township. We pay our property taxes to the Province of Ontario. The local service boards have elections each year. I learned this at the election meeting that took place this week at the local community centre, called by the Silver Water Board. A representative of the MNDM was there as well. First there was a general meeting to update the community on the financial status of the township, with spreadsheets that reflected the debits and a few credits because of the sale of the old tires of the fire trucks. Truly impressed with our treasurer! After that the recycling was the hot topic. One board member is absolutely against it and was angry that money had been spent on free recycling box for every fulltime residence. Since the board had already voted on this, and he had abstained from all meetings, he didn't really have a case.
Then it wss election time. Tim and I are still in the learn and discover phase of unorganized townships, and getting to know the people here, and when one of his fellow firefighters nominated Tim as a candidate, he politely declined. Give it a year or two and he will probably accept.
Except for one person the board members were all re-elected.
