We really enjoy being on the island. The people here are very friendly and when we tell them that we are now permanent residents here, then they really open up. Doing groceries, or picking up the mail is a social event. There is no such thing as quickly picking something up in the store. Very much the life style that you encounter in the Maritimes. We also get a lot of advise on where to buy what, and when we asked about a dog groomer, we got the name of Sue, and her shop is called Sue' Shampoochies right here in Gore Bay. We stopped at her place on our way to ?.. wherever the road trip would take us and introduced ourselves and Stella. She has 2 black doodles that were the friendliest dogs ever, playful and quiet. So we found a wonderful dog groomer. She really won me over when she was talking about someone of the male gender, known to her and us, who doesn't talk a lot to women, "as if women don't count". She does count and makes herself heard.
There is a lot of wildlife here. The regular geese, seagulls and cormorants with all their droppings on the docks, but also a regular show of deer just walking leisurely around, grazing in people's yards and eating their flowers. People drive slowly here and try to avoid driving at night and a lot of gardens are surrounded with high fencing.
And then there are the sandhill cranes. There are a few nesting in the field across from our house, but you also see them all over the place, including in the town of Gore Bay.
