Cold!

In a word...it's cold here! We woke up this morning to minus 33/C with a windchill of minus 40 at the Gore Bay airport. For our American friends that's minus 27 F. We also have received several dumps of snow. Lots of snow. In the last week alone we got 2 storms which gave us around 40 cm on top of the well established base. The snowmobile crowd are rejoicing. 2 members of the community stopped by 2 days ago on their sleds and I asked them if they could take their machines up through our forest to help pack down the trail. It made for easier snowshoeing for us. 

       So what do we do on days like this...not much. Throw another log on the fire, read the newspapers and books, and nerd. It's too cold to really stay outside long. The dog and I limit ourselves to perhaps 5 to 10 min at a time. I sure am glad that I cut all that extra wood this fall...it looks like we might need it. The locals have remarked that it's unusually snowy and cold. The oil pan heater on the Golf diesel is plugged in full time now just in case I get a fire dept call. We also bought a 125 watt engine heater for the generator. 
For those of you that have a Netflicks account...take a gander at a series called "Designated Survivor", a political thriller. Concept is fun. A non-politician ends up being the president of the US, and that concept, that an outsider takes on the job, is refreshing in politics. It stars Kiefer Sutherland whose full name is ....Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey Rufus Sutherland. His maternal grandfather was Scottish-born Canadian politician and former premier Tommy Douglas. The series starts off ok but gets a bit far fetched at times, if not downright sentimental and corny.
(Remember the similar series "24") Tommy Douglas is remembered as the father of "Medicare". For our overseas and American readers Medicare is the unofficial designation used to refer to the publicly funded single-payer health care system in Canada .
