We did have a white Christmas after all. As a matter of fact Canada had some serious snowstorms going. The States had blizzards. All this started 2 days before Christmas and if you hadn't reached your destination by then, chances were that you weren't going to get there. Flights cancelled, roads closed, and even train traffic came to a halt because of a downed tree on the tacks. Manitoulin escaped the worst of it all. We got maybe 40 cm of the stuff. Made my first trip on snowshoes into the woods.
And then the winds came, straight from the west and gusting to 80 km per hour. All this meant that the fallen snow was happily blowing around and ended up on the east side of the roof. All this snow and cold temperature came ahead of a warm up with some rain mixed in for good measure. Rather than waiting for the roof to collapse under the load of a snow/rain mix, Tim climbed up on the roof and shovelled it off. At one spot the drift was 4ft high and he called someone to help him!
Manitoulin didn't get the forecasted warmer weather. We may have had a few days of plus 2-4°C, and not too much rain. Most of that white fluffy stuff got packed down, and was followed by colder temperatures again and more snow.
We may have 30 cm of hard packed snow in the woods. Excellent surface to snowshoe. Stella has no problems with the stairs, but us creatures on snowshoes ... well, it's awkward. There is another warm-up in the forecast, but hopefully the snow will keep and just pack down a bit more.
