Went back to work for 2 weeks and then off to the boat again for 1 last week and a bit of sailing. Left Lucan on August 25 early in the morning and drove all the way up. We were still not sure what we prefer, driving with a few stops, or take the ferry. Both routes takes 8 hours. When you drive you can leave at any time of the day really, when you take the ferry, you have to be at the terminal 1 hour before sailing and then just park your car and kill time. It was a long day, but at least we had some nice weather in the forecast for the coming week, be it a bit cool. Arrived in the marina and unloaded the car. Dave and Cheryl were there as well and had invited us for dinner. Much appreciated after that drive.
The next morning we headed out and decided to go NE. D&C were thinking that maybe they should start heading back home and that would be a good start for them. Ended up at Gibson and stayed there for the night. Only 2 other boats in there, which was surprising considering it was the weekend and we had heard a few radio calls. Beautiful anchorage and we will be back.
The winds were forcasted to go NE and Gibson was no longer the place to be. Croker gives perfect protection so off we went, and we knew where all those boats had gone; to Croker! Both anchorages were pretty full. Dave decided to explore something that looked like a small bay at the west side of Croker and it was perfect for 2 boats, stern to shore.
Here we were, all by ourselves. Stayed there for 2 days and then it was time to move again, now because the winds were going to the south and "our" bay did not offer any protection against that. Tim and I decided to go to Croker (weekend was over and most boats had left) and Dave and Cheryl were going to head east on their way to Covered Portage to wait for a weather window to cross Georgian Bay. Sad to say good bye. We had some really good times with them and will sail here again next year, and of course we will see each other during the non-sailing season, but these past weeks were pretty special.
Once we entered Croker, we found 1 other boat in there. All others were gone. We set the anchor and for the first time in all those years we were able to swing in the inner anchorage. It was very quiet and peaceful. Of course the wind was now shifting to the the NE and 25 knots were in the forcasr, and even though Croker is good in that as well, Tim really wanted to go to the Benjamins and spiderweb the boat in in Tim's cove. So, off we went the next day and found ourselves in Tim's cove in the Benjamins. There were all of 6 boats when we arrived and the next day all but one left because of the winds that were going to pipe up, and we were alone in the Benjamins and it was wonderful. We are very glad that we decided to make Gore Bay our new marina. All the beautiful anchorages within 2-3 hours and they are empty in the off season. Just great.
