Weather is pretty wild here lately. This past Sunday tornado warnings went out for Goderich and sure enough Goderich got hit with a tornado 10 minutes later. It destroyed the town's centre and all the surface buildings of the salt mine, and killed 1 mine worker who could not make it to safety in time. It also dumped an unknown quantity of rain water in said salt mine, which then turned to salt water and what to do with that in a fresh water environment? All the workers there have been laid off indefinitely , except for a few mine rescue workers who are still doing clean-ups and safety assessments. This mine produces road salt, the stuff that makes your car rust, but makes the roads ice- and snow free. Might be an interesting winter.
Yesterday (August 24) was another day for tornado watches. This time for all of Southwestern Ontario. Basically from Windsor to Peterborough. (get out the atlas you Dutchies). This watch was upgraded to a warning and Lucan was mentioned as being in the path of a possible tornado. Luckily nothing came of it. Just lots and lots of rain, thunder and lightning, and hail
My Dutch niece Christine, with partner Nic and their 2 daughters will arrive at our place today, and stay for a few days. The weather is supposed to go back to more normal, sunny August days. Hopefully this is true and they can enjoy their last days of their Canadian trip.
